Cost calculation software can be based on:
- Feature recognition.
- Databases with historical costs.
- CAM software.
Advanced cost calculation systems (such as Simus Classmate) can:
- assess manufacturability (“Design for Manufacturing”) in addition to calculating costs,
- read in general data such as materials and surface treatments,
use PMI to generate routings and cycle times, - scan and interpret 2D drawings and link PMI to 3D models.
- process a multitude of production technologies and surface treatments (turning, milling, sheet metal, casting, etc.)
- read information regarding materials and standard (purchased) parts from e.g. ERP.
- export routings and cycle times to e.g. ERP.
- allow the user to modify included rate tables
- process e.g. castings, extrusion profiles, welded constructions, etc. as input in addition to standard semi-finished products (bars, plates, etc.).
- Import complete assemblies, create bills of materials from them, and subsequently calculate and assess the manufacturability of each component.
- Automatically select the most suitable production methods based on geometries and/or text.
- Work both in the cloud ("Software as a Service" = SaaS) and on your own servers ("on premise").
- Calculate with up to 5% accuracy.
For complex parts, experienced personnel must still critically review the results and make manual adjustments if necessary.
Advantages of modern product costing software:
- Short and fast iterations for optimizing costs and manufacturability.
Cost-determining features and tolerances become quickly visible and open for discussion. Alternative designs can be calculated quickly. - Many manufacturing companies "don't feel like" constantly creating new calculations and quotes, where it is questionable whether they will ever receive orders.
- Very short response times to quotation requests. This allows manufacturing companies to generate more revenue.
- Experienced cost calculators and skilled workers can concentrate on the difficult and complex parts. More and more customers are using commercially available cost calculation software. It is always good to be able to compare “their” calculations in detail with your own calculations.
